ContactMixtures of sodium silicate and perlite, for example, can be rammed into molds to form shapes that dry with zero shrinkage and have excellent insulating properties. It can be incorporating into bodies to improve their dry strength. As the main ingredient in Magic Water, it can bind leather-hard clay section better than the clay slurry (slip) alone.

ContactSodium Silicate. Description. The most popular deflocculant used in casting slips for many years. It is nearly always used with soda ash (when employed alone it can make a slip 'stringy' and thixotropic). The material is effective, reliable and inexpensive. However, it attacks the plaster in molds much more than more modern deflocculants and it
ContactThe sodium silicate is a thick liquid salt solution that forms a thin skin that, with applied heat, quickly hardens on the surface, encasing the soft and therefore, still malleable, clay cylinder beneath. Normally used as a deflocculant for casting slips, in this use it is quickly dried to the touch with some heat from a blowtorch.
ContactJun 23, 2009Sodium Silicate Used as a major deflocculant in preparing slip. It reduces the amount of water needed, therefore reducing shrinkage. This is a pure sodium silicate and must be mixed with water to a 50/50 solution for most casting bodies. Wishlist Be the first to review “SODIUM SILICATE” You must be logged in to post a review.
ContactMar 01, 2016The sodium silicate in the reclaim adversely affects the properties of the plastic clay body. I'd suggest trying to keep the matrerial out of your plastic clay supply as much as is possible. I've never been happy when it gets into things.... you might not either.
ContactWith each of your arms on a different side of the wire, you place th clay in the center of the table. Wedge a bit, lift it up and down cutting with the wire, slap the pieces together, and repeat. It takes a lot of practice and effort, but really it's necessary! You can use this to recycle slip as well.

ContactMar 01, 2016Posted February 29, 2016. I wonder if adding Epsom salts (dissolved in water) would improve the plasticity of clay contaminated with sodium silicate. I've found that this works for clay that's been deflocculated with sodium polyacrylate (aka Alcosperse aka Darvan). Link to

ContactIn this sodium silicate pottery technique, the residual sodium silicate gives a slightly glazed surface like a thin salt glaze. Expand the soft, decorated form on the wheel from the inside, while drying with a heat gun on the outside. This detail shows the decorative cracking created from heating and expanding the sodium-silicate-coated clay.
ContactAug 23, 2021Effect of curing period on nano-silica- and sodium silicate-treated clay soil. Figure 8 shows the UC strength (kPa) of clay soil treated with 4% SS with various dosages of NS over different 1, 3 and 7 days of curing periods. From the figure, it is clear that the curing period has a serious influence on the UC strength of treated clay soils.
ContactI've got some sodium silicate that I want to paint onto clay I've just thrown, then dry to create texture. If I mess up the pot beyond recovery while I'm stretching the clay would I have to scrape off the outer layer to reclaim some of the clay?
ContactFeb 06, 2015The sodium silicate works because it "kills" the outer clay layer's plasticity by changing the chemistry of the water in that layer of clay. The part it can't migrate into (interior of the form) remains plastic.
ContactSep 15, 2017Sodium water glasses of the moduli higher than 2.5 are worse fluidizers because they create independent silicate micelles co-existing with the dispergated kaolin grains in the slurry, while those of the moduli smaller than 2 precipitate free silica in the suspension and increase the basicity of ceramic slurry.
